Won’t you consider being a foster?
Meet Suri
There was no hesitation when
Palomino received a call from Willis Lamm about a foal
needing help.
Found out on the range with no mommy
Suri had survived for 5 days, through two snow storms and
was quite dehydrated, very thin, and covered in ticks.
Palomino and her husband, Matt,
headed out immediately to do what they could to save this
young girl, spending a lot of time trying to stabilize her
before taking her back to the nursery at the Orphan Foal
Rescue (aka Chilly Pepper – Miracle Mustang Rescue), a
division of Whispering Winds.
Suri needs your help to survive. Funds are needed to help
with the expenses of vet bills, transportation, special
formal, and any other necessities that may arise for her
care. Once old enough and weaned, she will be available
for adoption. But, we need to get her to that point
first.
All donations are tax-deductible and can be made directly
to the Orphan Foal Rescue for Suri either through paypal,
or snail mail to:
Last fall, Whispering Winds
rescued a herd of Angus that were abandoned at a
property. Many were in extremely poor condition and
placed on another ranch to recover. 3 heifers, 2
pregnant, were brought to Whispering Winds to be
turned out and monitored. One heifer calved in March
during an extreme storm, huddling down in thick
blackberry brush. And, 10 days ago the 2nd heifer
calved – twins! An older heifer, she apparently had
an issue with being able to count past 1 and left the
second, smaller of the two, bull calf alone while she
took the other and joined up with the rest of the
herd. Having not moved and looking very dehydrated
and close to death, we made the decision to bring him
in and put him in the nursery to be monitored and
fed. A week later the little guy is romping around
like bucking stock, and take pleasure in scaring the
horses when he pops out from behind the stack of hay
(where he has made his own room), and hangs out with
the rooster that someone “dropped off” one early
morning.
We’re excited that he’s made a
great recovery and once weaned and we’re sure he can
manage on his own, we’ll try to reunite him with the
herd.
Carson,
on the other hand, isn’t quite sure about the suckling
thing and would rather HE got the bottle than the
calf, but he is very tolerant. He’s our good boy
(sometimes!
No signs of the bear that
disrupted the herd a week ago. We’re thankful for our
neighbor and his tracking dogs that forced the big
Black bear to move on after taking out 2 of our
neighbor’s calves.
Jenkins is still in mourning
after the death of Lady Spirit. He’s keeping a close
eye on Loki, but his affect is not quite the Jenkins
we know. They’ve been a couple for quite a few years
so we know it will take him some time to balance out.
Grasses are growing, fencing is
getting done, work is progressing each day and we’re
finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel from
taking this run down and neglected cattle ranch to a
working ranch that is safe and functioning for all the
animals that call it home.
We still have a few horses available for adoption and will
be updating those on the website soon.
It has been
a rough road from time to time as we have gone through our
growing pains, and it’s your support that has helped us
get through. Without you we wouldn’t be able to care for
the animals who lives may otherwise have been lost. So,
on behalf of the gentle creatures, Whispering Winds thanks
you.
